About the Artwork

Happy You're Here is a bold dance of color and form: structured yet fluid, vibrant yet thoughtful. Built on the foundational geometry of a checkerboard, this original painting plays with a rainbow-on-black palette to deliver visual and emotional complexity. Curving checker-like patterns stretch and shift across the canvas, creating an energy that seems to breathe as you move past it. This piece invites the viewer to explore contrasts: joy vs. melancholy, precision vs. chaos, sharpness vs. softness. The result is a rhythmic artwork that adds fun and adventurousness to any space.

Artist Inspiration

In September 2023, I created a limited series of rainbow-on-black paintings; an aesthetic I’ve revisited many times. I’m drawn to this palette because of its duality: it’s playful yet dark, happy yet angsty. It speaks to those moments where your inner truth peeks through the mask. Where your presence says one thing, but your soul says another. Maybe it's the feeling of depression at your own birthday party. Maybe it's being a ray of hope in someone else’s storm. Maybe it's the art of being everything all at once. The pattern itself is rooted in my love for math, order, and repetition. As someone with OCD, there’s a deep satisfaction in creating rhythm out of chaos. The design was built from a traditional checkerboard grid, but instead of using a ruler, I crafted a hand-drawn “curved straightedge” to shape each line along consistent intervals—turning a little bit of math into art. The title Happy You're Here is inspired by an ideal of radical inclusivity. It’s the feeling of walking through a door and being embraced by your people, just as you are. It's about the multitudes of personalities that light up our lives, the warmth of belonging, and the joy of being celebrated.

Materials and Finishing Touches

Medium: heavy-body acrylic paint

Surface: 16” x 20” back-stapled canvas

Finish: all paints mixed with protective semi-gloss medium

Edges: painted black for a clean, frame-optional finish

Signature: signed and dated on the back

Please Note: hanging hardware is NOT included. This allows you to choose your preferred display method—such as a floating frame, mounting wire, or leaning it proudly on a ledge. For pieces up to 16" x 20", I personally recommend using two sturdy tacks, placed evenly along the top corners. For anything 20” x 20” or larger, nails are ideal to ensure secure support.
